The challenge

Meet Nigel, chair of Narthex, Birmingham’s biggest food bank. After losing government funding and struggling through COVID, Nigel needed to improve governance to protect volunteers and employees. The charity had never been able to afford the HR support it needed and had no HR policies or contracts in place. With Nigel about to step down as chair, he was desperate to leave things in a better place for the new CEO.

The solution

Narthex were struggling financially so we offered pro bono HR support. We met with Nigel to understand the company culture he’d worked so hard to create, then we created meaningful and pragmatic policies to make sure Narthex were compliant with governance standards.

The result

Narthex now have the correct policies in place for safeguarding, antislavery, disciplinaries, grievances, and lone working. And Nigel was able to step down after 17 years, knowing he had left a robust HR legacy for the new CEO to build on.
