Sickness Absence

The challenge

Our client, Nicklin Transit Packaging, were experiencing high levels of sickness absence among their manufacturing operatives. The CEO, David, was getting concerned about the impact this was having on his business costs and efficiencies.

The solution

David asked HR Caddy for practical advice and help to oversee the necessary changes. We went back to basics and looked at the historical absence trends. We trained all line managers to ensure they understood the Sickness Absence Policy and could carry out effective return-to-work meetings, which we made sure were taking place! We also looked at ways to signpost staff to external health and wellbeing services and improved Nicklin’s approach to health surveillance and wellbeing internally. We updated the relevant policies and reviewed each case individually, making tough decisions when necessary.

The result

David now has a workforce that consistently achieves fantastic attendance levels for the industry, with some weeks losing no days to sickness absence! This is a huge shift from previously having over 10 operatives off on one day.
HR Caddy provide support with our daily transactional HR needs and have been integral in leading and supporting transformational change in the business over the years. When looking for a support company, we needed a partner with good commercial understanding, who would be able to support managers as well as the executive team for future people strategy and business planning. The assistance we receive from HR Caddy has been credible, professional and knowledgeable, I have no hesitation in recommending them.
